Security incidents in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo decreased in June, but a shift in the nature of violence is occurring. A recent report from the Kivu Security Barometer project reveals the M23 rebel group has become the primary perpetrator of violence against civilians. While overall incidents declined, the M23 has surpassed other armed groups in the number of deaths caused. Simultaneously, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) continue to expand their operations into previously unaffected areas. The Barometer sécuritaire du Kivu monitors security incidents in the region and provides key insights into evolving conflict dynamics. This report highlights a concerning trend, indicating a heightened threat to civilian populations from the M23. The changing landscape necessitates continued monitoring and analysis of armed group activity.
