A new report from the Norwegian Directorate of Health reveals a significant rise in assisted reproduction, with a record 3,476 children born through these methods in 2023. Notably, the number of children conceived using donor sperm or eggs has increased substantially, reaching 722 – the highest number ever recorded. This increase coincides with the legalization of donor sperm treatment in 2020 and egg donation in 2021, expanding options for individuals and couples facing infertility. Health officials attribute the growth to increased accessibility, allowing more people to achieve parenthood. The report also highlights a marked increase in single women utilizing assisted reproductive technologies to have children. However, assisted reproduction using a couple’s own gametes remains the most common method. The data indicates a growing trend of donor-assisted conception in Norway.
