The rapid expansion of Dangote Group's refining activities in West Africa is putting pressure on the Société Africaine de Raffinage (SAR) in Senegal. Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote plans to invest in The Gambia and Guinea, neighboring Senegal. Facing this increased competition, the Mbao refinery is reassessing its goals and initiating an expansion project. SAR’s Director General, Abib Diop, acknowledged the threat posed by Dangote’s moves into regional markets, citing a planned $2 billion investment in The Gambia and investment in storage facilities in Guinea. Dangote's strategy aims to “flood the sub-regional market,” directly competing with SAR for the same customers. To remain competitive against the financially powerful Dangote, which already operates a large refinery in Nigeria, SAR must modernize and increase production capacity urgently.
