Commemorations are being held at the Ležáky Memorial in eastern Czech Republic to mark 84 years since the Nazi liquidation of the village on June 24, 1942. The massacre was a brutal act of retaliation for the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia. Ležáky was destroyed just two weeks after the similar destruction of the village of Lidice. The entire village population was murdered by Nazi forces. This year’s memorial event is being attended by Czech President Petr Pavel. The event serves as a solemn remembrance of the victims and a warning against the dangers of extremism.
