The Czech Republic’s population decreased by approximately 19,800 people in the first quarter of 2024, falling to 10.896 million, according to the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ). This decline is attributed to both emigration and a negative natural increase – more deaths than births. Between January and March, roughly 36,500 people emigrated from the Czech Republic, while 29,200 immigrated. A total of 30,100 deaths were recorded, compared to 17,500 births during the same period. The statistical office notes that birth rates have been consistently decreasing for the past five years. These demographic trends suggest a continuing population decline for the country.
