The Czech Ministry of Health is encountering resistance from other government departments regarding a proposed expansion of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) access. Currently, Czech law restricts IVF treatment to heterosexual couples, a limitation the Ministry aims to amend. While some ministries support the change, others, including the Ministries of Labor and Justice, have voiced concerns. The Ministry of Labor specifically argues against potentially increasing the number of single mothers through state-supported assisted reproduction. Demand for IVF has tripled in the last 15 years, reaching a record high in 2023 with over 5,000 children born through the procedure. The Ministry of Labor has submitted seven key objections to the proposal. This debate highlights ethical and social considerations surrounding reproductive rights in the Czech Republic.
