A Prague court has overturned the 1978 conviction of Ivan Martin Jirous, a prominent figure in the Czech underground movement. Jirous was originally sentenced to 18 months in prison for a speech delivered at an art exhibition. The ruling was annulled on Tuesday by the District Court for Prague 1. Jirous’s lawyer, Lubomír Müller, stated the court must now reconsider the original charges unless the prosecutor decides to drop the case. The original conviction stemmed from Jirous’s criticism of the communist regime. This decision marks a significant development decades after the initial sentencing, potentially leading to a re-examination of the case or its complete dismissal. It reflects a broader reassessment of politically motivated convictions from the communist era in the Czech Republic.
