The Czech National Bank (CNB) increased its main interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to 3.75 percent on Thursday, reaching a level last seen in early May of last year. Accompanying this decision, the CNB also raised the discount rate to 2.75 percent and the lombard rate to 4.75 percent. All seven members of the bank board participated in the meeting. Prior to the announcement, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš cautioned that an interest rate hike would significantly harm citizens, businesses, and the overall economy. The move is likely a response to rising inflation within the Czech Republic. The CNB aims to stabilize prices and maintain economic stability through monetary policy adjustments. This increase signals a tightening of monetary conditions in the country.
