Czech water management authorities are working to prevent a repeat of last year’s significant fish kill on the Dyje River near Bulhary, in the Břeclav district. In 2023, approximately 30 tons of fish died near the local weir. Investigations by Mendel University in Brno determined the cause was an extensive algal bloom – specifically cyanobacteria – which depleted oxygen levels in the water and created toxic foam. Authorities are now implementing measures to mitigate the risk of another bloom and subsequent fish mortality. The focus is on preventing the conditions that led to the extreme cyanobacteria growth. This year’s efforts aim to maintain sufficient oxygen levels and avoid the formation of harmful toxins. The situation is being closely monitored to protect the local ecosystem and fisheries.
