Mozambique’s Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) has arrested a customs official in connection with the seizure of 3.7 tons of fentanyl at Maputo Airport on June 12th. The Mozambican national is suspected of involvement based on judicial warrants and ongoing investigations. Searches were conducted at the suspect’s residence as authorities gather evidence. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to four, including one Nigerian national. Authorities are now pursuing legal authorization to incinerate the seized drugs. SERNIC has reiterated its commitment to combating organized and transnational crime, urging public cooperation in reporting criminal activity. The investigation remains active as officials work to solidify the case against those involved in the large-scale drug smuggling operation.
