The Croatian parliamentary Committee on the Constitution, Rules of Procedure and Political System commenced hearings on Tuesday afternoon for the first five of fifteen candidates vying for three positions on the Constitutional Court. The committee will continue interviews with the remaining candidates on Wednesday. Following the interviews, a consensus between the ruling HDZ party and the left-wing opposition is required for appointment. However, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced it will not engage in negotiations this time, potentially creating a stalemate in the selection process. The appointments are crucial for maintaining the functionality of the Constitutional Court. The lack of agreement could delay filling the vacancies and impact the court’s ability to rule on legal challenges. This marks a shift in approach from the SDP, who previously participated in similar negotiations.
