A recent study has confirmed the return of the critically endangered Chinese bahaba – nicknamed the ‘Panda of the Sea’ – to Hong Kong waters. The fish, absent from Hong Kong for over a decade, was detected through environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis of seawater samples. Researchers successfully identified traces of the bahaba’s DNA in several western bays, marking a significant breakthrough in marine species monitoring. This non-invasive method avoids the need for physical capture, proving valuable for tracking endangered populations. The findings demonstrate the potential of eDNA technology for conservation efforts. Its presence suggests possible breeding or foraging grounds within the region and offers hope for the species' recovery. The study underscores the importance of continued monitoring to understand the bahaba’s distribution and behavior.
