An actuarial study has revealed a significant deficit of ¢237.722 million in the Employee Retirement Fund (FRE) of the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS). The CCSS acknowledges that current legislation prevents it from mandating contributions from its workers to address the shortfall. This finding indicates a continuing path towards the unsustainability of employee pensions within the Costa Rican system. The Financial Management responded to this massive actuarial gap with concern, highlighting the limitations imposed by existing laws. The study underscores the urgent need for reforms to ensure the long-term viability of the pension scheme for employees of the CCSS in Costa Rica. Without adjustments, the FRE faces increasing financial strain, potentially impacting future pension payouts.
