Slovakia’s government has appointed Anton Chromík, co-founder and leader of the Alliance for Family – an organization critical of LGBTQ+ rights and abortion – to its Human Rights Council. This appointment was first reported by council member Milan Pilip. Simultaneously, three existing experts were removed from the council without stated reasons. The Alliance for Family has a history of opposing rights for LGBTQ+ individuals and access to abortion services. This marks the first time a person with Chromík’s publicly stated views has been included in a governmental advisory body focused on human rights. The move has raised concerns about the direction of human rights policy in Slovakia and the potential for bias within the council. Critics suggest the changes signal a shift towards more conservative values influencing governmental decisions.
