An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has now claimed over 200 lives, just over a month after it was declared an epidemic. As of today, 875 cases have been confirmed, with a mortality rate of 23%. Health officials report challenges in containing the virus due to ongoing security concerns and limited access to affected areas, hindering contact tracing efforts. The International Federation of Red Cross Societies warns the outbreak, first reported on May 15th, has yet to peak and could take a year to control. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or treatments for the specific strain driving this outbreak. The affected provinces – Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu – are regions plagued by conflict and displacement, complicating response efforts. The virus has also spread to neighboring Uganda, with 19 confirmed cases and two deaths, primarily among Congolese travelers.
