A new report from the Institute for Structural Research, commissioned by the Polish Green Network, highlights the crucial role of the Just Transition Fund (JTF) in supporting Poland’s coal regions. The report indicates that the cessation of JTF funding after 2027 could jeopardize ongoing efforts to mitigate the social and economic consequences of phasing out coal. It warns of a potential funding gap, hindering new projects and disrupting those already underway. The JTF has been instrumental in assisting these regions in adapting to a changing energy landscape. Researchers recommend continued dedicated financial support for coal regions in the next EU financial perspective. Without sustained funding, the ability of the state and local governments to manage the transition effectively will be weakened, potentially leading to negative repercussions for communities reliant on the coal industry. The report stresses the importance of a stable financial framework for a successful and equitable transition.
