The Japanese coast guard reported that a Chinese survey vessel, the *Kexue*, has departed Tokyo’s exclusive economic zone following repeated requests to cease its research activities. Japan deemed these operations unauthorised and issued multiple warnings to the ship. The *Kexue* was initially detected on September 27 approximately 70 kilometres (45 miles) north of Ishigaki island, situated in Japan’s southernmost prefecture. This incident highlights ongoing tensions regarding maritime boundaries and research activities in the region. The Japanese government maintains that the research was conducted without permission within its economic waters. The vessel’s withdrawal follows a period of diplomatic and operational pressure from Tokyo. The situation underscores the sensitivity surrounding activities in the East China Sea.
