Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s three-day visit to Ulaanbaatar, from June 13th to 15th, reinforced the established, traditional relationship between China and Mongolia. High-level meetings resulted in a joint statement outlining commitments to regional development and upholding principles of the post-war international order. Discussions focused on cross-border infrastructure and trade, solidifying a “comprehensive strategic partnership.” The visit occurred during a period of political transition in Mongolia, shortly before Prime Minister Nyam-Osor would attend the World Economic Forum’s “New Champions” meeting in Dalian. Simultaneously, Ulaanbaatar is preparing to host the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in August 2026. These overlapping events underscore Mongolia’s need to balance relations with major powers while pursuing its national interests and multi-pillar foreign policy.
