China is appealing for global free trade as it prepares for potentially contentious summits, including talks with the European Union next week that could escalate into a trade war. Vice-Premier Zhang Guoqing emphasized China’s commitment to open markets during a videoconference hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. The meeting, also attended by leaders and representatives from Germany, Canada, Brazil, India, Italy, Japan, and South Korea, occurred as trade tensions with the EU intensify. China’s call for a “facilitative trading environment” appears to be a preemptive move ahead of these crucial discussions. The EU is currently investigating Chinese state subsidies for electric vehicle manufacturers, a key point of friction. The outcome of these summits could significantly impact global trade relations and economic stability.
