Satellite imagery indicates China is enhancing the missile capacity of its Type 054B guided-missile frigates currently being built in Shanghai. Images from June 28th, analyzed by Vantor, show alterations to the vertical launch system (VLS) on a new vessel compared to previously deployed ships. These modifications suggest a 50 per cent increase in missile storage and a bolstered anti-air defense system. This upgrade implies a significant improvement in the warship’s combat capabilities, allowing it to carry a larger missile payload. The Type 054B is already considered China’s most advanced frigate, and this development highlights continued modernization efforts by the People’s Liberation Army Navy. Experts believe this expansion signals a push for greater naval power and regional projection.
