China is implementing two new national standards for electric vehicles, effective July 1st, focused on enhancing safety. These standards will require all new electric vehicles sold in China to include a physical disconnect switch for the battery. Crucially, the regulations also mandate that EV batteries must be designed to prevent combustion or explosions. The move aims to address growing concerns about thermal runaway and fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries in EVs. These new rules are expected to significantly impact EV manufacturers operating in the Chinese market, the world’s largest. The standards represent a proactive step by Chinese authorities to ensure consumer safety and promote the continued growth of the EV sector. Compliance will be compulsory for all vehicles seeking certification from July 1st onwards.
