China is investing $74 million to expand production at the Bayan Obo mine in Inner Mongolia, the world’s largest rare earth deposit. The project aims to increase the mine’s annual output by 50%, from 10 million to 15 million tonnes. While primarily focused on boosting iron ore production, the expansion will also significantly increase rare earth element output. Bayan Obo is a uniquely complex deposit, containing not only rare earths but also iron, fluorite, niobium, scandium, and thorium. This move signals China’s continued dominance in the rare earth market, critical for various high-tech industries. The increased capacity will likely impact global supply chains and pricing for these essential minerals.
