Chinese scientists are exploring the feasibility of transforming abandoned coal mine tunnels into underground farms. The proposal, originating from researchers in Shanxi, a key coal-producing province in central China, aims to establish a green and circular economy within the nation’s extensive mining industry. Published in China Mining Magazine last month, the plan leverages the natural insulation offered by these disused mines, protecting crops from surface weather and potential natural disasters. With an anticipated 15,000 mine closures across China by 2030, a significant opportunity exists to repurpose this infrastructure. This innovative approach could offer a sustainable solution for food production and environmental rehabilitation. The concept seeks to address both agricultural needs and the challenges posed by widespread mine abandonment.
