Chinese scientists have proposed a novel method for asteroid deflection involving a subsurface nuclear explosion. The plan centers around first creating a deep hole within a threatening asteroid using a metal penetrator. Subsequently, a second spacecraft would deliver and detonate a 3-megaton nuclear bomb within this created cavity. Simulations suggest this approach could be the most effective means of either destroying or altering an asteroid’s trajectory. Researchers from the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology led the study, detailing the two-stage process. This research offers a potential solution to the catastrophic threat posed by large near-Earth asteroids. While controversial, the method aims to minimize debris scattering compared to surface explosions.
