Chinese scientists at Xidian University are developing technology to transmit solar power wirelessly from space to Earth. The team, led by Fan Guanheng, has successfully demonstrated power transmission over 100 meters using mirrors, solar panels, and a microwave transmitter. Their long-term goal is to scale this technology to transmit power from a space-based solar plant located 36,000 kilometers away. This research focuses on generating clean energy in space, circumventing issues like weather and nighttime limitations of terrestrial solar farms. The project aims to address global energy demands through a potentially revolutionary power source. Initial testing involves measuring light concentration and refining the transmission process. Further development is needed to achieve the ambitious goal of large-scale space-to-Earth power transfer.
