Chinese researchers have developed a novel sensor inspired by the electric fields generated by electric eels, enabling robots to perceive objects without physical contact. The technology mimics how eels navigate and hunt in dark, murky environments. Professor Zhang Weiqiang of Xidian University explained the aim is to allow robots to identify materials and surface conditions before interaction. This “electric eel” sensor represents a significant advancement in robotic perception and could greatly enhance capabilities in various applications. The research, recently published, demonstrates the potential of biomimicry in robotics. This development promises safer and more efficient robotic interactions with surroundings. It allows for detection of objects and their properties—texture, composition—remotely.
