Chilean journalist Mauricio Weibel was the target of a surveillance operation involving former military intelligence director Schafik Nazal and ex-judge Juan Poblete, who allegedly discussed intercepting his phone under a false identity. Weibel revealed this during an interview with Fast Check, detailing concerns about potential judicial overreach. He also expressed alarm over a proposed “Gag Law” (Ley Mordaza 2.0) which could criminalize the publication of information related to ongoing investigations. Weibel criticized the lack of opposition to the bill from across the political spectrum, calling it "alarming and distressing”. The proposed law poses a direct threat to journalistic freedom and the protection of sources. He believes this legislation could seriously undermine investigative reporting in Chile. The journalist fears the law could lead to self-censorship and limit public access to information.
