The oldest and most valuable manuscript in the Czech lands, a fragment of the Gospel of Mark from the 6th century, has temporarily left Prague Castle for the first time. Emperor Charles IV acquired the manuscript in Italy in 1354 for Saint Vitus Cathedral. Currently, the fragment is the centerpiece of a special exhibition in the Italian city of Aquileia, bringing together pieces of the ancient gospel. The exhibition, which began on September 13th, offers a rare opportunity to view these fragments collectively. It will run until April 25th of next year. This marks a significant cultural exchange, returning a treasured piece of Czech history to its original geographical context in Italy for a limited time. The display honors Charles IV’s acquisition and highlights the manuscript’s historical journey.
