Morocco’s central bank, *Bank Al-Maghrib*, faces growing challenges in its efforts to expand digital payment methods as cash circulation continues to rise. The volume of cash and coins in circulation reached 550.3 billion Moroccan dirham by the end of August 2026, up from 491 billion dirham at the end of last year. This represents a 12.1 percent increase, equivalent to an additional 59.3 billion dirham in cash transactions, within just eight months. The surge in cash usage is putting pressure on the effectiveness of *Bank Al-Maghrib’s* initiatives to promote digital alternatives. This trend suggests that despite ongoing efforts, a significant portion of transactions in Morocco still rely on physical currency. The continued prevalence of cash may hinder the country’s progress toward a more cashless economy. The report originated from Hespress, a Moroccan online newspaper.
