A recent national survey indicates that cash remains the dominant method of payment in Guatemala. The 2026 National Household Financial Inclusion Survey (ENIFH) found that nine out of ten Guatemalan households use cash for routine purchases. Furthermore, eight out of ten households rely on cash to receive remittances. This suggests a strong preference for cash transactions despite increasing financial inclusion initiatives. The survey highlights a continued reliance on traditional payment methods within the country. These findings offer insight into consumer behavior and the challenges of transitioning towards digital financial systems in Guatemala. The ENIFH provides key data for policymakers and financial institutions seeking to broaden access to and usage of formal financial services.
