A Dutch appeals court has overturned the conviction of the captain of a speedboat involved in a 2022 collision on the Wadden Sea near Terschelling, which resulted in four deaths. The captain had previously been sentenced to community service, along with the skipper of the other vessel, a water taxi. The court now rules the captain did not act negligently, noting no speed limit was in place and communication was adequate. Investigators determined the water taxi made a last-minute maneuver to the right, causing the collision. Three people were injured in addition to the four fatalities, including a 12-year-old boy whose body was never recovered. While the skipper of the water taxi did not appeal the initial ruling, the captain argued against his conviction, leading to this reversal. Families of the victims expressed disappointment with the verdict, hoping for accountability.
