The mother of Cape Verde’s national football team goalkeeper, Vozinha, will be able to attend the team’s upcoming World Cup match against Uruguay after being initially denied a visa. The denial stemmed from financial constraints related to new US visa restrictions imposed on citizens of several developing nations, including Cape Verde, requiring substantial refundable deposits. US Representative Hakeem Jeffries intervened with a request to Secretary of State Marco Rubio to resolve the issue. Vozinha, hailed as a hero after a 0-0 draw against Spain – Cape Verde’s first-ever World Cup point – had publicly expressed his sadness that his mother couldn’t witness his success due to the visa complications. The US had previously implemented stricter visa policies, a continuation of measures from the Trump administration. The visa restrictions have since been eased for some countries ahead of the tournament.
