A Canadian inmate, Harris Mohamed, has been released from jail after a judge ruled he was subjected to mistreatment by correctional officers. Mohamed, accused of armed robbery, alleged misconduct during a 2023 incident at Maplehurst prison near Toronto, involving collective punishment of nearly 200 inmates. The incident included forceful cell extractions, painful restraints, pepper spray use, and deliberately subjecting prisoners to cold temperatures while clad only in underwear. This release marks the fifth time in recent months an inmate has been freed from Maplehurst due to similar allegations of staff misconduct. Ontario’s government is appealing the release of three other inmates previously freed for the same reason, while many others have received sentence reductions. Investigations followed nineteen complaints from inmates claiming human rights violations stemming from the incident, triggered by a single assault on a guard.
