Canadians are increasingly victimized by bank fraud schemes resulting in substantial financial losses annually. These victims often bear the brunt of these losses themselves, despite being defrauded through no fault of their own. Customers of major Canadian banks – TD, Royal Bank, Scotiabank, CIBC, and the Bank of Montreal – are now urging Ottawa to increase the liability banks hold for fraudulent transactions. They argue the current system unfairly burdens individuals with costs they should not incur. These calls for intervention seek to shift the responsibility for preventing and reimbursing fraud losses onto the financial institutions themselves. This proposed change aims to protect vulnerable customers across Canada from financial ruin due to fraudulent activity.
