Cameroon’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program, launched in 2023, has extended healthcare access to over nine million citizens. Key benefits include free maternal care, subsidized treatment for HIV/AIDS and malaria, and expanded dialysis centers. The Minister of Public Health presented these advancements to the Senate during a recent question period, responding to inquiries from Senator Pierre Flambeau Ngayap. While acknowledging significant progress in improving healthcare access and reducing inequalities, the Minister also highlighted ongoing challenges. Specifically, the legal framework protecting patient rights is still under development, considered crucial for the program’s long-term sustainability. The government views strengthening this legal foundation as essential to ensure durable and institutionalized access to healthcare for all citizens. The Senate continues to monitor the UHC’s implementation and legal consolidation.
