Cameroonian teachers are escalating their protests with a national petition addressed directly to the President, demanding action on long-standing grievances. The Collective of Cameroonian Teachers’ Organizations (COREC) cites ignored strikes, inadequate salaries, and a deteriorating education system as key drivers for the petition. Teachers report unfulfilled government promises regarding a special status and the promised National Education Forum, first pledged in 2019. The situation has led to a significant decline in academic performance–with a failing score of 5/20 now common for sixth-grade entry–and a growing exodus of teachers seeking opportunities abroad. Backed by 18 teacher unions, COREC is urging massive mobilization to secure the immediate signing and implementation of the special status.
