UN Women Cameroon recently convened a dialogue bringing together public institutions, UN agencies, and community organizations to address the needs of women living with HIV. The initiative aims to integrate the rights, economic inclusion, and social protection of these women into national policies, recognizing their empowerment as crucial for overall development. Despite progress in HIV testing and treatment, women constitute nearly two-thirds of adults living with HIV in Cameroon, with young women aged 15-24 accounting for 19% of new infections. Vulnerability is exacerbated by gender-based violence, economic inequalities, and limited access to sexual and reproductive health services, compounded by stigma and psychological challenges. Discussions highlighted the need for stronger psychosocial support, access to training and entrepreneurship programs, and increased support for community organizations. UN Women intends to incorporate these priorities into its upcoming national strategy, advocating for a holistic HIV response that links health, social justice, and women’s economic autonomy.
