A new report by thirty Cameroonian NGOs details a concerning human rights situation throughout 2025, a year marked by a presidential election. The 100-page report documents over 700 deaths and nearly 1,500 arrests linked to post-election violence, ongoing conflicts in the Northwest, Southwest, and Far North regions, and general repression. The violations encompass abuses of civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as gender-based violence. Following the election results, approximately 1,000 individuals were arrested nationwide, with some – including minors – remaining in detention. The report also highlights the deaths of political figures, such as Anicet Ekane, while in state custody, and numerous instances of physical and psychological aggression, as well as arson and explosions in conflict zones. The findings paint a grim picture of the human rights landscape in Cameroon during a critical political period.
