Following the deaths of Constitutional Council President Clément Atangana and member Bah Oumarou Sanda in Cameroon, procedures are underway to appoint their successors. The National Assembly’s bureau convened on October 12, 2026, to address the designation of a new Constitutional Council member to replace Bah Oumarou Sanda, in accordance with Article 51 of the Constitution. The President of the National Assembly has gathered input from the bureau and is now empowered to designate the new member, who will then be appointed by a presidential decree. The President of the Republic is also responsible for appointing the new President of the Constitutional Council, with the Constitution stipulating the President nominates three members, including the President. The Constitutional Council officially acknowledged the vacancy of the presidential post three days after Atangana’s death, under the leadership of senior member Paul Nchoji Nkwi. These appointments are critical to maintaining the functionality of Cameroon’s Constitutional Council.
