A Cameroonian MP, Angèle Toukam Tela, questioned the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family regarding the increasing number of femicides in the country. Globally, approximately 85,000 women are intentionally killed annually by intimate partners or family members. In Cameroon, 56 femicides were recorded in 2023, a number that has risen to an estimated 77 in 2025 and 50 between January and April 2026. The Minister, Marie Thérèse Abena Ondoa, reported a total of 1,599 cases of gender-based violence nationwide from January to April 2026, including 166 rapes, 50 femicides, and 13 infanticides. The government has initiated measures to combat gender-based violence, but the MP seeks further details on specific actions to eradicate or reduce femicides. The increasing trend in femicide cases highlights the severity of the issue within Cameroonian society.
