Cameroon is currently hosting more than 413,000 refugees and nearly 18,000 asylum seekers. To bolster their protection, the Technical Secretariat for the Management of Refugee Status, in collaboration with UNHCR, initiated a capacity-building workshop on October 13, 2026, at the National School of Police in Yaoundé. This workshop targets police officers, border police agents, and immigration officials, recognizing the critical role security forces play in refugee protection and rights access. The training focuses on international and national refugee law, asylum procedures, refugee rights and obligations, and the protection of vulnerable individuals. A key goal is to balance security needs with respect for human rights and international protection principles. Discussions highlighted the need to train police trainers to integrate refugee protection and rights into the national police curriculum, ensuring a more effective, humane, and rights-respecting response to those fleeing their homes in Cameroon.
