Ahead of the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) scheduled from October 5th to 9th in Tanzania, the African Group held a videoconference on September 29, 2026, to align continental positions. Cameroon was represented by Vice-President of the Senate Din Bell Armande and Secretary Fon Chafah Isaac, focusing particularly on the upcoming election for the IPU presidency. Discussions centered on ensuring strong participation and a unified stance on key issues to be addressed during the session in Arusha. The election itself, contested by candidates from Australia, Chile, and Azerbaijan, is a major point of contention, with Africa aiming to act as a unified bloc to promote its interests. This virtual meeting serves as a precursor to an in-person meeting of the African Group slated for October 4th in Arusha, the day before the official opening of the assembly. The ultimate goal is to present a cohesive African voice at the world’s largest parliamentary organization.
