United Kingdom’s Andy Burnham has stated that Russia interfered in the 2016 Brexit vote. He is the first British Prime Minister to openly claim evidence of Russian meddling in the referendum held ten years ago. Burnham revealed in an interview with the podcast The Rest is Politics that he received a clear answer confirming Russian involvement after taking office at Downing Street. He did not specify the methods of alleged interference. This claim contrasts with statements made by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2020, who said there was no evidence of Russian involvement. A 2020 government report in the United Kingdom was unable to definitively determine Russian interference in the Brexit vote, however, it did conclude Russia attempted to influence the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.
