Bulgaria’s parliament has initiated the process of reconstituting the Commission for Counteracting Corruption and Forfeiture of Illegally Acquired Property (CCAP). The parliamentary committee responsible approved procedural rules governing the nomination, vetting, and hearing of candidates. However, a member of parliament has publicly dismissed further discussion of criticisms leveled against the nominees as “meaningless.” This statement signals potential political friction surrounding the selection process. The CCAP was previously dissolved and its revival is seen by some as a key step in addressing corruption concerns. The next stage involves proposing, verifying, and interviewing candidates according to the newly adopted rules. The process is expected to be contentious given the existing skepticism regarding the nominees.
