Bulgaria’s Audit Office has launched an audit of the Ministry of Interior and the Executive Forest Agency regarding expenditures related to forest fires. The audit will cover the period from the beginning of 2024 to mid-2026, examining how over 1.3 billion leva (approximately €663 million) allocated for fire prevention, control, and response has been utilized. The investigation aims to assess the effectiveness of spending and identify any irregularities in the use of public funds. Specifically, auditors will trace the flow of money and evaluate whether resources were deployed efficiently. This action follows public concern regarding the scale and impact of recent wildfires in the country. The Audit Office intends to provide recommendations for improved financial management and disaster preparedness.
