Mongolia’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has reported a rise in brown bear incursions into settlement areas, with over ten cases recorded since the beginning of 2026. These incidents have been documented in the aimags (provinces) of Khentii, Dornod, Selenge, and Khövsgöl. Local environmental authorities, emergency services, and special commissions are working together to safely drive the bears away from populated areas, avoiding any harassment or harm to the animals. Investigations are underway to determine the reasons behind this increased presence in human settlements. Authorities are exploring whether factors like abundant food sources – including vegetation, berries, or the presence of poachers and berry pickers – may be drawing the bears from their natural habitats. The Ministry and local administrations are issuing advisories to residents, noting bears are often drawn to areas with food sources, water, and livestock pastures. Conditions like food scarcity, drought, and wildfires, as well as carcasses and food waste, are also contributing factors.
