Brazilian police fatally shot a man in Curitiba after he held thirteen young children hostage for over two hours in a school complex housing both a kindergarten and elementary school. The children were reportedly between four and five years old. Authorities stated the man threatened to douse himself and the hostages in gasoline and ignite them. Negotiators attempted communication, but police determined lethal force was the only option. Distraught parents gathered outside the school awaiting news during negotiations. Footage showed visible distress as children were eventually brought out by officers following two gunshots. Curitiba city officials have announced they will provide psychological support to the children and school staff involved in the incident. The man is believed to have suffered from schizophrenia.
