The municipality of Haarlemmermeer is making waste separation easier for people with visual impairments by offering braille labels for waste containers. Initiated by visually impaired resident Gerard Dullaert-Wetzel of Hoofddorp, the labels help identify the correct bin for different waste types through tactile symbols, braille text, and recognizable colors. Dullaert-Wetzel proposed the idea after his building transitioned from individual bins to centralized, underground containers, making sorting difficult without assistance. The project is a collaboration between the Haarlemmermeer municipality and waste management company Meerlanden, and is among the first of its kind in the Netherlands. Residents can request the labels through the waste company's website. Meerlanden representative Mieke Hidding emphasized the labels’ role in enabling independent living, allowing individuals to participate fully in society without needing constant assistance.
