The Borno State government has successfully reintegrated 720 former combatants, along with their families – comprising 992 spouses and 2,050 children – into society. This initiative falls under the state’s “Borno Model,” a non-military approach to peacebuilding focused on encouraging surrender and rehabilitation. The 3,762 individuals, designated as “Batch 9” and assessed as low-risk, were officially released in a ceremony held in Maiduguri. The program aims to address the root causes of conflict and foster lasting peace in the region, which has been heavily affected by insurgency. This latest reintegration represents a continued effort by the Borno State government to rehabilitate and reintegrate individuals who have renounced violence. The “Borno Model” has gained recognition for its focus on deradicalization and providing support for former combatants to rebuild their lives. The released individuals will receive ongoing support to facilitate their transition back into civilian life.
