Authorities in Borno State, Nigeria, have released 720 former insurgents, along with 992 spouses and 2,050 children, back into society. The individuals, designated as “low-risk” and “minor clients,” swore an oath of allegiance on the Quran as part of the reintegration process. This marks the ninth batch of former combatants to be released under the state’s deradicalization, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) program. The program aims to address the ongoing insurgency in the region by offering a pathway for repentance and rehabilitation. The released individuals will be returned to their respective communities across Borno State. The move is part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the region and address the root causes of extremism, though it remains a controversial topic among some residents. Vanguard News reported on the event.
